We Make Transition Easier! PMRE has built a structure for members who are much more focused on the present and the future than on the past. Political advocacy and assistance with benefits are two things that retirees seek most. Socialization is a natural result of your membership. IN THE BEGINNING A couple of years after Betty Pollitt retired in 1982, Tony Conetta said that he had a job for her. NYSUT wanted retiree chapters to be organized and he wanted her to do the organizing in Patchogue. Marcia Hoff and Betty compiled the first mailing which did not include administrators. The term educator was used in our name instead of teacher because we very soon welcomed any administrator who had been a teacher. After reviewing materials from NYSUT, Marcia and Betty wrote a constitution, which was somewhat revised a few years later. Our first officers were Betty Frail-Pollitt, president: Marcia Hoff, vice president: Don Regan, secretary, and Russ Wygand, treasurer. Claire Siegel and Roland West were delegates-at-large. In the early 1990's, Betty decided not to run again. Sal Nicosia was president for several months. In 1990 Stanley Salsberg took over and has been president ever since. Stanley Salsberg was a charter member of the Patchogue Federation of Teachers, which was affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers. At this time most Patchogue teachers were members of the Patchogue Classroom Teachers Association, which was affiliated with the National Education Association. It appeared fitting that he continue as president of our retiree chapter as it gains more and more recognition in the merged NYS United Teachers. By July of 1985 we had 29 members. By October we had 49 members. After the large group of people retired in 1986, our membership grew to 80. Today we number over 200!
