Sal Nicosia

As we enter the new millennium, responsible and caring citizens are

raising serious questions about the future of our political system.

Voter turnout has been in a steady decline in the past twenty years.

Our 18-to-30 year old citizens have shown more dramatic lower voter

turnout than above-3 0-year old voters.   In our most recent

national election, fewer voters, percentage wise, participated in the

congressional and presidential elections than in previous national elections.

Poll after poll suggest that voters do not trust politicians.

Sal Nicosia, in his fifth decade of helping educate our children, has written

Empowering Our Children . . . to Be More Effective in the Political Process.

This is a valuable guide for teachers to help students become astute citizens.

It will develop a greater political awareness in our young citizens which will

manifest itself in a growing participation in the political process.

This hands-on approach will help inculcate in the students a strong desire to

actively participate not only in me voting boom but in attending

public meetings and encouraging them to actively participate

in political campaigns.

Sal was a social studies teacher and guidance counselor in the district
