HERO Project   Revisited

The Power of One

"Last Christmas, I sent out our usual annual 'Holiday Update' letter and

mentioned The HERO Project. One person, Tony Segelski, thought it worthy of

a feature {See NEWS AND VIEWS, July-August 2002 page 2)

in the PMRE newsletter and so it appeared.

One person, Claire Siegel, a shopper at Charming Shoppes,

read it, made a contribution, and we spoke on the phone.

One person, Doritt Bern, the CEO of Charming Shoppes Inc.,

a Fortune 500 company, organized a recognition conference

called Voices for women's charitable projects.

Claire nominated The HERO Project. The rest is history, as they say.

Over 3,000 projects were nominated. One hundred projects across the nation

were selected. The HERO Project was one of them.

I had the incredibly uplifting and humbling experience of meeting and

networking with the 99 other women for two days in Houston, Texas.

We shared and learned about mission, synergy,

fundraising and supported each other's determination, tenacity, and spirit.

None of this would have happened if Tony, Claire, and Doritt, had not

single-handedly reflected and then taken action.

Never underestimate The Power of One.

Thank you! Charlotte Gioe"

HERO Project Update

1)  We are now in the second year of the Power Skills resilience education

With Life and LuAnn Lampasone, Love of Life) to the Beth Dyruff Resilience

Award.

4) We are developing a HERO Project support team in Florida so      rage *•

that the Project can continue when we are visiting our

daughters in New York and Minnesota.

5) We have received some wonderfully generous and

surprising donations.

6) We have formed a partnership with a LI elementary

school character education program to recognize

students by opening 529s (education funds) for next

year.

7) The Power Skills Program is almost ready for

possible publication and use as a fundraiser.

8)  We are exploring the use of a bracelet with

resilience (HERO -1

Resilience of One) characteristics stamped on it as a

possible fundraiser.

Dorrit J. Bern, Chairman and CEO of Charming

Shoppes Inc., and founder of VOICES says, "I'm

always thrilled to learn about all the remarkable

endeavors women take on and accomplish every single

day. As the CEO of a company that serves women, I

feel it's important to recognize and celebrate these

unsung heroines of everyday life." Charlotte Gioe was

chosen for her program The HERO Project which was

started in 2001 to serve and support bereaved and at-

risk youngsters through the Power Skills education

program and provide "seed money" for education, and

has resulted in providing hundreds of youngsters with

resilience skills, personal support, and scholarship

funds.
